About Me.....And Welcome To My Kitchen

At 49 years old, I had to learn how to cook - again.  My son was diagnosed with an extreme MSG sensitivity, and when I looked through the items in my pantry I was horrified at how many items I used every day included it.  Then, I realized I didn't even know what half of the stuff in these items was!  That, plus the prevalence of MSG in prepared foods and restaurants meant that many of the time-saving items I relied on as a working mother were officially verboten.  I know that all-natural and organic prepared foods are available, but with how expensive they are they were definite budget busters.  This experience, plus the gluten sensitivity I developed two years later, forced me to rethink how I looked at food and it's preparation.  What I learned along the way is what I want to share with you all in this blog.

Here are some appliances I have that make life easier.  I am not an Amazon affiliate so I get nothing from these links.  I am also not saying that you must own every single one. However, some of these things just make life easier.

Please excuse the lid being askew, and I was in the middle of making some Amaretto Apple Butter when I took this picture.  This wonderful appliance not only cooks food in a fraction of the time of a conventional oven, it's also so versatile! It has a Slow Cooker function (I'm using it in this photo), as well as a yogurt function that lets you make your own Greek Yogurt (a big money saver!)

I have the West Bend bread machine and love the fact that it can make 3 lb loaves since I often make bread for company.  The larger size also lets me cut the loaves in half and freeze some for use later in the week.  However, a smaller machine also works just as well. if anyone in your house has a gluten issue, a bread machine is definitely useful since you can make tastier bread for a fraction of the price of a store bought gluten free loaf. What I love about having a bread machine is that with 5 minutes of prep work we can have all-natural organic bread for a fraction of the cost of store-bought.

I posted the link to the Ninja Double Stack because that's the one in the photo, but you can find an air fryer at just about any price level.  Like the Instant Pot it also prepares food more quickly, but unlike the Instant Pot the food comes out crispy (think of it this way - the Instant Pot is good for chicken soup or pulled chicken while the Air Fryer is good for fried chicken or broiled items). Some of them even have a dehydrator function so you could make your own veggie chips or jerky.
